Chronic tension and movement restrictions are common topics encountered by massage therapists, rehabilitation specialists, trainers, osteopaths, and bodywork practitioners. Movement Analysis Skills

Practitioners require observation skills, Manual Muscle Testing (MMT), palpation, hypothesis testing, and effective communication. The process typically begins by observing how a person stands, walks, raises an arm, rotates, and breathes. Muscle responses are then assessed under specific conditions. Based on these findings, the practitioner develops a functional hypothesis and verifies it through further testing.

When Medical Evaluation Is Necessary

Referral to a physician is appropriate in cases of acute injury, sudden or worsening pain, numbness, weakness, sensory disturbances, loss of motor control, fever, inflammation, unexplained weight loss, night pain, suspected fracture, symptoms following a motor vehicle accident, or postoperative conditions without physician clearance. Functional assessment should never delay appropriate medical care.
